President Ahmad Tejan Kabbah was elected President in 1996. Just over a year later, on 25 May 1997, he was overthrown in a military coup. He established a government-in-exile in Conakry, Guinea until March 1998 after Nigerian-led ECOMOG forces ousted the erstwhile military regime led by Major Johnny-Paul Koroma. President Kabbah was elected to a second term in 2002.
